Clarks Fork Canyon Meadows is conveniently located just 38 road miles from the bustling town of Cody, Wyoming. Buffalo Bill Cody, who founded the town of Cody while visiting his son in the 1870s, had a vision that the area had a lot of potential. Located only 52 miles from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, Cody felt the area may become a potentially high-tourist corridor. In the mid-1890s, he returned, and with the collaboration of others, the town was incorporated in 1901.
The location of Cody makes it a popular tourist destination, but the area is also a great place to settle and live. With the breathtaking scenery of the Beartooth Mountains to the north and the Absaroka Mountains to the west makes this a recreational haven begging to be explored by the outdoor recreationalist. The Shoshone River, which runs along the edge of Cody, is a northern Wyoming river whose headwaters are in Yellowstone National Park and provide excellent fly fishing, floating, rafting and wildlife viewing.
Cody has a variety of excellent dining experiences. To take a glimpse into the past, The Irma is a great place to start. Built by the city’s co-founder, “Buffalo Bill” and named after his daughter Irma, the hotel is also famous for its bar back made of cherry that was gifted to Buffalo Bill by Queen Victoria. It is a great place to lounge around and soak up the vibrations of the past.
Rodeo is an important expression of the culture in Cody. Slated as the Rodeo Capitol of the World, in 1938 Cody began hosting the Cody Nite Rodeo. This has become the longest running nightly rodeo in the world and runs June through August. With multiple tickets outlets around town, the evening kicks off with doors opening at 7 o’clock pm and the events beginning at 8 o’clock pm. One exception to the nightly rodeo is the celebration of Independence Day with the Cody Stampede Rodeo. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association honored this event as the “Best Large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year” in 1998 and 1999.
The Paul Stock Aquatic & Recreation Center, constructed in 2001, was built in large part due to generous local donations. The Center features a large aquatic center with lap, leisure and therapy pools, recreational water slides and an aquatic climbing wall. It also includes a gymnasium, racquetball courts and full variety of exercise and weight training options.
Museums are abundant in Cody. It is home to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Buffalo Bill Dam & Visitor Center, Cody Country Art League, Cody Heritage Museum, Historic Cody Mural and Museum, and countless others. Other entertainment in town includes free music in the park during summer months, Plains Indian Museum Powwow each June, The Wild Bunch Gunfighter Show - a free “western re-enactment, which runs June thru September, that involves the crowd and always ends in gunfire!”, plus many other meaningful ways to spend time.
