FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE–January 14, 2025; Alcova, Wyoming: Swan Land Company’s Buffalo, Wyoming office announces the sale of Pathfinder Ranches, a 916,000-acre modern cattle empire, rivaling the scale of the great landholdings of the open range era. The property was listed for $79.5 million on August 6, 2025, and sold to Salt Lake City-based The Ensign Group, L.C., one of the largest cow/calf producers in the US. The buyer was represented by David Anderson and Matt Anderson of A5 Real Estate. The final sale price remains undisclosed.

The Ensign Group, L.C., operating as Ensign Ranches, owns and/or manages over one million acres of private and public lands across Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. Ranked among the largest landowners in the United States, the company will continue operating the property as a cattle ranch doing business as Pathfinder Ensign Ranches. The nation’s first sage-grouse conservation bank—approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service—will also remain in operation.

“Watching a family-owned operation with Ensign’s ranching values and operational standards step in as the next steward of Pathfinder is encouraging on many levels,” said Scott Williams of Swan Land Company, the listing broker. “With a clear commitment to honoring the ranch’s cattle legacy and conservation ethic, this feels like a genuinely positive transition for one of America’s most distinctive properties.”

The company is owned by Alexander, Christopher and Victoria Robinson and their families and managed by CEO Christopher Robinson, a resident of Park City, Utah. Robinson is also an elected member of the Summit County (Utah) Council and involved in many land and water conservation and management organizations.

“When a company purchases a property like Pathfinder Ranches, it’s not just buying land—we are accepting responsibility and stewardship for a significant piece of the country’s natural resources and cultural and economic fabric, ” said Robinson. “Great ranches are built over generations by communities and families, shaping the character of the West. At Ensign, we’ve spent decades proving that production agriculture and conservation aren’t competing interests. We are very humbled and excited to play this role in the Pathfinder’s future. We are also very appreciative of our lenders, AgWest Farm Credit and Western AgCredit, as well as our hard-working team at The Ensign Group for making this happen.”

“Finding a buyer like Ensign—with their proven commitment to responsible ranching and conservation—ensures Pathfinder’s legacy will continue. That’s the best outcome we could hope for,” said Ryan Lance, President of Pathfinder Ranches.

Larger than the state of Delaware and encompassing 1,431 square miles, the historic Wyoming operation comprises over one percent of the state’s total landmass. An assemblage of 12 ranches, each with their unique history, under unified ownership across four counties (Natrona, Carbon, Sweetwater, and Fremont), Pathfinder stretches from Devil’s Gate to the Pedro and Ferris Mountain ranges, encompassing a diverse landscape of high plains, rolling foothills, and broad river valleys, including 20 miles of the Sweetwater River and reaches of the North Platte River. The ranch offers a powerful combination of working scale, water resources, wildlife habitat, and landmark scenery, including iconic emblems of westward expansion such as Independence Rock, the original Pony Express Trail, and the Oregon Trail. The property is 45 miles from Casper.

John C. Fremont—“The Great Pathfinder”—once explored this region, mapping the frontier and forever linking his name to its history.

BUILDINGS & IMPROVEMENTS:

With numerous ranch houses, outbuildings, barns, and even a church in one unit, the ranch’s residential focal point and headquarters is The Great Pathfinder Lodge, with 6,579 sq ft of living space, 9 bedrooms, and 7.5 bathrooms.

RECREATION & WILDLIFE:

Pathfinder Ranches offers easy access to blue-ribbon trout fishing, including the world-renowned Miracle Mile, Fremont Canyon, and nearby Grey Reef stretches of the North Platte River. The Alcova and Pathfinder Reservoirs offer outstanding boating, paddleboarding, camping, water sports, and fishing. The ranches are home to a variety of wildlife, including elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, big horn sheep, pronghorn antelope, eagles, black bears, coyotes, mountain lions, and more. The ranch encompasses some of the most coveted hunt areas for elk, deer, and antelope in the western United States.

CATTLE OPERATION:

The term Animal Units Month (AUM) is a standard unit for measuring the amount of forage needed to sustain a 1,000-pound cow and her calf (up to 6 months old) for one month. This measurement is a way to standardize forage consumption and assess pasture carrying capacity. Pathfinder Ranches’ AUM capacity:

  • Supports approximately 90,444 AUMs, adaptable across livestock classes and seasonal use
  • Five to nine times larger than the average AUM capacity of most Western working ranches (Many large ranches operate with 10,000–20,000 AUMs)
  • Capable of sustaining multiple large-scale herds across rotational grazing units, without exceeding range capacity

GRAZING DEMAND & LAND USE EQUIVALENCY:

  • Provides the forage equivalent of more than 2.7 million grazing days per year (90,444 AUMs × ~30 days)
  • Currently utilizes ~73% of permitted AUMs, intentionally maintaining a buffer for forage resiliency, range health, and wildlife
  • Actively supports a herd of ~3,400 cows, 180 bulls, 7,500± yearlings, and 130 saddle horses across multiple units
