At the heart of it all lies Craig, an unincorporated fly-fishing enclave of about 50 full-time residents that swells to about 500 during busy periods and serves as the epicenter of the upper Missouri River fishery. Founded in 1886 by miners and homesteaders who filed gold claims and built along the Montana Central Railway, Craig endured a devastating flood in 1908 that washed away much of the town, including railway tracks. Rebuilt with the help of laborers from nearby Holter Dam construction in the early 20th century, it has evolved into a quintessential fishing village tucked against the broad Missouri. Today, Craig is a global draw for anglers, thanks to its proximity to the tailwater below Holter Dam, which releases cool, nutrient-rich water creating ideal conditions for prolific trout populations—averaging 5,500 to 6,000 fish per mile, with rainbows and browns commonly 16 to 20 inches. The town’s laid-back vibe includes essential amenities like The Trout Shop and Headhunters Fly Shop, both offering gear, outfitting, and guide referrals. Dining options feature Izaak’s restaurant, Craig Taphouse, and the iconic Craig Bar (or Joe’s Bar)—providing casual spots for anglers to swap stories over a beer. Lodging is fishing-focused and straightforward, with camper trailers, summer cabins, rooms for rent, and luxury options like the Missouri River Ranch, which boasts over a mile of private river frontage. No grocery store or gas station exists in town, emphasizing its role as a pure support center for the fly-fishing community rather than a full-service hub.

For expanded offerings, the small town of Cascade is 14 miles north, known for its riverside location, pioneer heritage, and surrounding mountains. Cascade offers a perfect balance of small-town friendliness and outdoor access. Cascade provides all necessary amenities, including restaurants, groceries, banking, health care, ranch supplies, and fuel for residents and travelers. Named for the nearby cascades on the Missouri River, the town has historical ties to early settlers and explorers, including the Lewis and Clark Expedition that passed through the area in 1805-1806. Larger communities like Great Falls and Helena are within an hour’s drive, offering expanded business services. Recreational opportunities abound in summer and winter, with fishing, boating, hiking, hunting, and snowmobiling readily accessible.

The property is easily accessed via Interstate 15 and Old US Highway 91 and is less than an hour from two nearby commercial airports in Great Falls and Helena.

Recently upgraded, Great Falls International Airport (GTF) offers full-service FBOs and commercial flights through major carriers like Alaska, Allegiant, Delta, and United Airlines. As one of the key airports in Montana, GTF provides direct flights to major hubs across the nation, including the West Coast, Midwest, and beyond.

The outdoor deck has been recently updated with new Trex decking, sleek cable railings, and a custom gas fireplace that extends the living space seamlessly outside. There are comfortable blue Adirondack chairs arranged for lounging, and a striking custom fire pit serves as a focal point, ideal for evening gatherings with flames flickering against the river backdrop. Complementing the main residence, the property features a versatile detached two-car garage with an integrated studio apartment, providing additional space for guests, hobbies, or potential rental income. This structure enhances the functionality of Mighty Mo River House, providing secure storage and comfortable auxiliary living quarters. The detached garage features a double overhead door and an updated epoxy concrete floor for vehicle or boat storage. There is a functional workbench and overhead storage for recreational gear. The gravel driveway leads directly to the garage, with mature trees providing shade and privacy in a stunning backdrop of rocky cliffs and foothills in the background.

The studio apartment boasts a clean, contemporary design with gray walls, recessed ceiling lights, and durable hardwood-style flooring throughout. The open-concept layout includes a compact kitchenette with black cabinetry balanced by a warm wooden countertop, stainless steel sink, and a mini-fridge with open wooden shelving for display or storage. The full bathroom features an efficient layout with a toilet and vanity cabinet with a built-in sink and a walk-in shower with sliding glass doors. This studio is ideal for extended family stays, a home office, or even short-term rentals, combining simplicity with comfort in a private setting.

The property is also equipped with a large-scale Generac Generator that can run the entire home and garage in case of a power outage.

Surrounding the home, the very well-maintained landscape features mature trees and several beautiful planting beds with perennial flowers, all surrounded by an elegant and functional stone pathway.

Step out your back door, walk down the custom aluminum staircase, and cast a line into one of Montana’s premier fisheries, the Missouri River. The property offers direct access to quality angling for rainbow and brown trout, making it a true angler’s paradise right in your backyard. Whether you’re a seasoned fly fisher or teaching the next generation, the Missouri offers memorable days on the water for all.

Waterfowl, including ducks and geese, migrate through the Central Flyway, attracted to the river and nearby wetlands. Upland birds such as pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse, and Hungarian partridge are well-known inhabitants of Central Montana. Bald eagles are also a common sighting. The river corridor supports a variety of wildlife species for year-round observation, including deer and bighorn sheep, which are both regular visitors in the dramatic rock outcropping across the river.

Recreational options are abundant. Located near the Missouri River and surrounded by public lands in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, the area features expansive valleys, canyons, and mountain peaks. Whether active or relaxing, outdoor opportunities are limitless.

Montana winters offer skiing magic, with Great Divide and Showdown Ski Areas providing family-friendly downhill skiing, terrain for all levels, and reliable snow all within an easy day-trip drive. Snowmobile trails in the nearby mountains allow groomed paths and off-trail exploration.

Nearby reservoirs like Holter Lake and Canyon Ferry provide boating, waterskiing, and angling for trout and walleye. The area boasts hiking and biking trails for all abilities, plus numerous campgrounds.

Cascade County, founded in 1887, is rich in American West heritage. Named for the Great Falls of the Missouri River, the region was key in exploration, fur trade, and ranching booms of the 19th century.

Before European settlement, the area was used by Native American tribes like the Blackfeet and Salish as hunting grounds and travel corridors along the Missouri River, as well as a vital route for the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805-1806. Early settlers arrived via stagecoaches and railroads, establishing farms and ranches.

The town of Cascade was incorporated in 1911, growing around agriculture, ranching, and the river. Prospectors mined nearby for gold and other minerals, making it a trading hub. The Missouri River’s falls powered early industry, and Great Falls became the county seat.
